This event is a benefit to support Afropop Worldwide

Additional gifts are welcomed and appreciated!

Funds raised will support Afropop Worldwide’s ongoing work to organize, digitize, catalogue, and develop our massive media archive, an irreplaceable resource representing 30 years of research in Africa and its many diasporas. See the story here: AfropopPeabody

Timbila reinvents some of the most beautiful music traditions of southern Africa, with an East Village edge. You will definitely be in the mood for dancing and trancing!

Banning will also introduce his brand new book Lion Songs: Thomas Mapfumo and the Music that Made Zimbabwe (Duke University Press). It’s a story that goes all the way back to Afropop’s earliest field work there in the 1980’s, and continues in today’s headlines. (The very first copies of the book are expected to be available that night.)

The event will take place in the beautiful private home of musician and philanthropist Joel Bluestein. Your ticket comes with tasty bites and refreshments. To mark the honor of receiving the Peabody Award, share a special toast with us!
